Brighton and Hove Citizens’ Advice Bureau and Trading Standards are teaming up to run Scam Awareness Month throughout May.

The key message of the campaign will be: Scams are crimes – help stop them!

We want to drive home the message that scams are not just some kind of minor irritant – they are criminal frauds that harm millions of people, sometimes with catastrophic results for individuals and families.

Every year more than three million people in the UK fall victim to scams losing hundreds and even thousands of pounds. It is estimated that nearly half of people in the UK (48 per cent) have been targeted by a scam and that £3.5 billion is lost to scams every year.

However this number is predicted to be higher as many victims of scams do not like to admit to being a victim. Therefore we would like to create maximum visibility of how to recognise a scam and where to get advice.
