Since 2012 when the Welfare Reform Act was passed into law, we have seen an increasing number of individuals facing destitution, & a failure of the social security “safety net” to provide support for people in difficult circumstances.

The programme of cuts is set to continue. Almost 2 million people will lose more than £1,000 a year following the switch to universal credit, with those claiming disability benefits the worst affected, according to research by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS).

Those who are disabled or live with a disabled person are especially likely to be persistently, rather than temporarily, poor, says the IFS.
