March 2016 - One in Six Adults Struggling With Debt Worries

One in six UK adults are living with problem debt.

A major study, based on a model developed by the Money Advice Service and CACI, estimates the levels of over-indebtedness in the UK. For the first time, the model gives every UK adult a statistical likelihood of being over-indebted, based on a number of factors and characteristics – including tenancy, age, household make up and income. This data gives a picture of ‘over-indebtedness’, indicating where people have either fallen behind with their bills in at least three of the last six months or feel that their debts are a heavy burden.

Scam Awareness

Brighton and Hove Citizens’ Advice Bureau and Trading Standards are teaming up to run Scam Awareness Month throughout May.

The key message of the campaign will be: Scams are crimes – help stop them!

We want to drive home the message that scams are not just some kind of minor irritant – they are criminal frauds that harm millions of people, sometimes with catastrophic results for individuals and families.

Every year more than three million people in the UK fall victim to scams losing hundreds and even thousands of pounds. It is estimated that nearly half of people in the UK (48 per cent) have been targeted by a scam and that £3.5 billion is lost to scams every year.

However this number is predicted to be higher as many victims of scams do not like to admit to being a victim.  Therefore we would like to create maximum visibility of how to recognise a scam and where to get advice.

Merger: Money Advice and Community Support and Money Advice Plus Services

Money Advice and Community Support (MACS) has merged with Money Advice Plus Services (MAPS) based in Eastbourne. To find out more about MAPS please visit their website using this link.

“We are confident that combining the expertise and resources of both organisations will give us the opportunity to provide even more effective support for residents needing money and debt advice, including greater support with money management as we move towards the implementation of universal credit, and engage with the complexities of welfare reform”... says Gerry Plater, Operations Manager of MAPS.

"Money Advice Plus got me out of a big hole. I was depressed. Clearing debts got me out of the mire and helped me go forward, it gave me a way out."

"I was absolutely amazed! I am so grateful for your help with my financial difficulties. I wouldn't have even known about applying for assistance with utility bills and other things without your assistance."

"We've found Money Advice Plus very useful over the past few months. It is very re-assuring to be able to direct our residents to an agency we know will be able to clarify any money concerns. What they've liked the most is that you come to their homes to explain and help. They say it's a much more personal service than working with the Pension Service, and much less daunting."
