Money Advice Plus Participation Group

The Participation Group gives clients a say about how Money Advice Plus works and the way we shape our services. The group meet approximately every two weeks in the main Money Advice Plus offices, with meetings lasting around two hours. Meetings are informal, and take place over a cup of coffee or tea, with biscuits and fresh fruit available.

Who is the Participation Group for?

Membership of the group is open to all Money Advice Plus clients, including those whose cases are closed. We try to advertise the group widely using posters and flyers in our office waiting room and interview rooms, via Money Advisers, and through our outreach projects.

What does the Participation Group do?

People in the Participation group prioritise issues they would like to focus on. The group’s suggestions and ideas are passed on to Money Advice Plus managers by the Participation Worker, who is also responsible for organising the group meetings.

Promoting client participation is very important for Money Advice Plus, and is closely aligned with our values:

  • “We are committed to promoting a ‘person led’ approach in supporting people to help them take control of their finances and increase their abilities to manage their money”
  • “We promote a culture of empowerment and ensures clients views and experiences are heard and acted upon in influencing the future shape of Money Advice Plus services”

Since its formation, the Participation Group has been involved in a variety of different projects; for example the MACS Customer Care Charter. The group has also produced a Participation Policy and reviewed the MACS Client Brochure to make it more user-friendly. In April 2013 the group created a Radio ShowMoney Advice and Community Support Against Loan Sharks. The programme was broadcasted on Radio Reverb (Community Radio for Brighton and Hove).

The work of the participation group is currently supported by funding from Big Lottery through our Big Lottery Money Advice Project. The group also organises and run Money Advice Plus' Breakfast Club.

A few months ago, following requests from our clients we  installed an AquAid water cooler in our waiting room. We have now pledged an Elephant Pump in a village in Africa. The Pump is inscribed with Money Advice Plus name. We are proud of helping the village  accessing water to be used by everyone!

How to get involved

If you want to find out more about our Participation Group please contact Paolo, Participation Worker at Money Advice Plus, email or call 01273 664000.

"Money Advice Plus got me out of a big hole. I was depressed. Clearing debts got me out of the mire and helped me go forward, it gave me a way out."

"I was absolutely amazed! I am so grateful for your help with my financial difficulties. I wouldn't have even known about applying for assistance with utility bills and other things without your assistance."

"We've found Money Advice Plus very useful over the past few months. It is very re-assuring to be able to direct our residents to an agency we know will be able to clarify any money concerns. What they've liked the most is that you come to their homes to explain and help. They say it's a much more personal service than working with the Pension Service, and much less daunting."
